In the Swing of Things relates to a psychological place in which fears and hindrances are dramatized and success seems too far to reach. The installation uses the familiar place of a playground to represent this mental state for it is one of the earliest sites of risk-taking and accomplishment, not only physically, but also psychologically and socially. The series of adult-sized equipment, whose instability or stubbornness interrupts or decimates its purpose, allows not only for an adult-sized accomplishment but also an adult-sized risk. However, upon looking at the pieces, the risks far outweigh the accomplishments. The viewer is faced with uncertainty relating to the feelings of anxiety and self- doubt brought on by the cycles of this psychological state that prevents its “visitor” from moving past the worry and fulfilling their desires. More than likely, it will result in the decision not to try whatsoever, preventing even the benefits of failing.
